Muhammad Ali's Quotes Really Surprised Me While Researching For I Learned It All From My Kids

As I'm preparing my book, I Learned It All From My Kids, I've been looking for quotes from lots of other people. I'm looking for statements that support my own thoughts and values, but I've really been surprised at what my research has shown.

So many people are negative about what they say… or at least the quotes that people save from them are negative.

Even many of the Golden Age of Television stars are negative, and I was hoping they'd spice things up within the covers of my book.

But I don't want negative thoughts. I'm not blind to them and I know they exist… I just don't see any reason to pass them on to others.

One who really surprised me (someone who has many deep, positive, insightful quotes) is Muhammad Ali. Oh, sure "Fly like a butterfly, sting like a bee" comes to mind, but that's not one I'll use. But he's really hit some nerves for me.

Things like, "Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It's not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything."

Or, how about "I hated every minute of training, but I said, "Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion."

Or, "The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights."

Believe me, these will each make my book as supporting statements to some of my own ideas.

It's been a real eye-opener to see what others over the centuries have said. I look forward to sharing some of their thinking when I present my own.

Why Create A Site Like ILearnedItAllFromMyKids.com?

I had a friend once ask me, "Aren't you tired of living in cliches?"

I hadn't thought about it that way but I replied that "short, key phrases let us understand an entire subject in just a few words. It's like when someone skips the whole joke and just tells a few words of the punchline and everyone laughs - we understand even without the whole build up.

So it is with many of the phrases and ideas I've learned from my kids over the years.

Oh, sure… these aren't all quotes unique to me or my kids, but when you see all of them, you'll see how many lessons are taught in just a few words. Life lessons and meaningful ways to approach people. Lessons that inspire and lessons that teach. And sometimes these may even be lessons that save someone from pain or despair.

So… journey with me. I'll share some of these ideas here and some in my upcoming books.
